Overview

India is a post-colonial country, still suffering from the long term impacts of the British colonial period. With this paper, I specifically researched the colonizing and homogenization of beauty standards within India. I looked into the role of the global media and beauty industry in perpetuating harmful standards for Indian women, as well as the role of internal discourse. I finally explored the role of democratized media in changing the narratives around beauty, and the ways women can once again define their beauty as intrinsic to themselves, not as something dictated by globalization and colonial ideas.
